Sandra EksiogluSandra Eksioglu, Assistant Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, received a Visiting Industrial Scholar Award from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). The award is designed to facilitate visits by senior industrial scientists to ORAU member institutions. The primary goal of the awards program is to foster interactions between faculty and students at member institutions and industrial scientists.

Dr. Eksioglu will use the award to bring Dr. Shahab Sokhansanj to MSU. Dr. Sokhansanj is a Professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada and a Distinguished Researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is an expert in the area of biomass feedstock supply and logistics analysis. Dr. Sokhansanj has developed models and analysis tools that identify optimum equipment and infrastructure for biomass collection and transport to conversion facilities.

The Transportation Working Group at Mississippi State University, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and the National Center for Intermodal Transportation are hosting Dr. Sokhansanj on September 10, 2009. Dr. Sokhansanj will give a seminar on his recent research titled “Development of the Integrated Biomass Supply Analysis and Logistics Model.” In addition, Dr. Sokhansanj will meet with MSU faculty members and students interested in the areas of transportation, and biomass supply and logistics management.

Carl Morris

Carl Morris appears third from left.

Senior industrial and systems engineering student, Carl Morris, won 3rd place honors in the engineering competition during the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Region 3 Student Conference held at Louisiana State University on February 13 – 15, 2009. The Region 3 is composed of 16 universities in the southeastern United States including Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Florida, Auburn, Louisiana State University, and University of Puerto Rico. Carl’s presentation and paper “Semi-Markov Decision Process for Determining Transshipment of Critical and Slow-Moving Medical Goods” was based on research he conducted with ISE Professor Mingzhou Jin.

The ISE department is proud of Carl, and congratulates him on this terrific achievement.

Josie SmithISE senior, Josie Smith, has been awarded the Harry Charles F. Simrall award from the Association of Retired Faculty. The prestigious award is given to an outstanding senior in the Bagley College of Engineering for their academic achievements, professional leadership, and community service.

Ms. Smith has received several academic awards and scholarships for her educational vigor: the Outstanding Industrial and Systems Engineering Senior, the Schillig Scholar at Mississippi State University, and the William Bunker Industrial Engineering Scholar. She has also been recognized by several honor societies such as Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Lambda Sigma Honor Society. Further, Ms. Smith has also been recognized through the MSU Global Leadership Program (Kwangwoon University, Seoul, South Korea) and has received the Spirit of State Award. She has improved the campus experience through her leadership and service roles in several organizations including ISE-REPS, Roadrunner, Engineering Ambassador, Honors Council, and Student Association.

Congratulations, Josie!

Congratulations are befitting for ISE doctoral student Jihun Kang. His paper entitled “Detecting Mental Workload Fluctuation During Learning a Novel Task by Thermography,” which was co-authored by Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves, was selected as a Best Paper by the Perception and Performance Technical Group during the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 52nd Annual Meeting in New York this fall. The Perception and Performance Technical Group promotes the exchange of information concerning perception and its relation to human performance. The award comes with a cash prize of $500. The national award provides a testament to the quality of Jihun’s scholarship. The Department is proud of his outstanding accomplishment.

Mr. Kang can be reached at jk168@msstate.edu for additional information about the award and paper.

Dr. Kari Babski-ReevesDr. Kari Babski-Reeves received the Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 52nd Annual Meeting in New York this fall. The national award recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the conception or design of any product, service, or system that has had a significant impact on users and exemplifies the excellent use of empirical human factors/ergonomic design principles. Dr. Babski-Reeves was a member of the team that researched and developed the UPS IntegradTM Training System, a computer-based training system for UPS drivers that utilizes agent-based and interactive learning presented through animation. Funding for the project was provided by the Department of Labor through a grant to UPS to develop a state-of-the art training system that would serve the needs of diverse drivers, including Generation Y drivers. Dr. Babski-Reeves scholarship is noteworthy having advanced the way the industry educates its workforce.

Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves can be reached at kari@ise.msstate.edu for additional information about the national design award and research.

Dr. Burak Eksioglu

Dr. Burak Eksioglu (holding plaque)

Dr. Burak Eksioglu received the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) 2008 Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research. The award was presented to him at the international conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Eksioglu has provided leadership in ISE through his dedicated service as the chair of the Operations Research and Statistics Technical Committee. The Committee is responsible for defining the content for both the undergraduate and graduate course offerings in operations research. Professor Eksioglu has built a reputation with both undergraduate and graduate students as an effective educator, blending the use of advanced instructional technologies with proven pedagogic methods. His instruction in the operations research arena is exemplary, and students tell us that they highly value his courses. We could not agree more with the students. Dr. Eksioglu is most deserving of the IIE 2008 Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research.

Congratulations are in order for Dr. Mingzhou Jin and Joyce Zhang. Professor Jin received the 2008 Faculty Research Award and Ms. Zhang received the 2008 Graduate Student Award. Both awards are from the Mississippi State University Office of Research. Dr. Jin and Ms. Zhang research and develop new methodologies important to operations research in logistics and transportation. Their work has been supported with over $1.25 million in funding from agencies such as the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, U. S. Department of Transportation, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Dr. Jin and Ms. Zhang are most deserving of the awards, and we are pleased that their successes have been recognized in this way.

Fred Buie, an alumnus of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was honored with the 2008 Distinguished Fellow Award.
